Own one narrow problem in a crowded category: blonde hair color

Ugly Duckling · See the business →
Who it’s for
Someone with a skill or niche knowledge who wants to test an online product business around one specific customer problem, without quitting a job first.
The lesson
Ugly Duckling does not sell hair color in general; it positions itself as the company that makes blonde easy, and sells a lift, tone and care routine with free tutorials and tools. A narrow promise plus teaching content gave the founder search traffic and repeat buyers without needing a big brand budget.

Who pays and why

Two groups buy the same products. Professional colorists want toners and lighteners that work predictably and are easy to order online. Consumers who color at home want to fix brassy or uneven blonde and will pay for a product that comes with clear steps. The company's pitch is that blonde is hard, and that it will tell you what to buy and in what order: lift, tone, care. The founder says he talks to hairdressers and customers directly, and that sales data showed people wanted white-blonde results, so the company focused on blonding. Customers can also message the team for a recommendation, which is a service that adds to the product.
