Turn a niche identity into a product line and a community

The Longhairs · See the business →
Who it’s for
Someone with a job and a small budget who belongs to, or deeply understands, a group that mainstream stores serve poorly.
The lesson
The Longhairs began with one cheap item that men with long hair could not easily find, then built a community around it and added higher-value products such as shampoo and conditioner. The lesson is to start with a narrow group you belong to, sell one small item well, and let the group's identity do the marketing.

Who pays and why

Buyers are men with long hair who want ties that do not snap or tangle, and grooming products designed for their hair. A hair tie costs $12, an easy first purchase. The reason to buy from this brand rather than a drugstore is partly the product and partly belonging: customers are treated as members of a group, and each tie sale supports a charity for children with hair loss. Shampoo and conditioner give repeat buyers a second reason to return.
