Sell a small personalised item on marketplaces, not on ads

Lucasgift · See the business →
Who it’s for
Someone with a craft or a laser engraver who wants to test a small made-to-order gift business on existing marketplaces.
The lesson
A father-and-son team built a personalised leather-goods business by putting one simple item, the engraved keychain, in front of buyers already searching on large marketplaces, then adding the personalisation themselves. They report that paid ads did not pay back, so most sales still come from marketplace search and reviews.

Who pays and why

Buyers are consumers looking for a gift with a name or message on it. A plain keychain sells for a few dollars on big marketplaces; the founders sold engraved ones for roughly double or more, competing on design and concept rather than the lowest price. They also say price matters a great deal: a 30% discount reportedly lifted orders from 2-3 a day to about 20.
